cameras are growing in popularity, and more and more people are using them as part of their , but these cameras are gaining national attention for capturing video of other events aside from those happening within homes.
Recently in Topeka, KS, a home security camera captured video of a shootout occurring on a traditionally calm and quiet street. Footage captured by a home security system showed a dark SUV speeding down a residential Topeka street, and shortly thereafter, local police began receiving reports of a gun battle occurring.
“The kids are used to everybody watching out for them here so they’re not paying any attention to somebody speeding through here real bad so that’s the bad thing,” resident Larry Selk told Kansas First News. “Well shooting is the bad thing, but just the speed of the vehicles was bad, you know.”
The man who gave Kansas First News the footage he captured with his security equipment has remained anonymous, but did submit the footage to police to assist in the investigation. Because of the footage provided by the citizen, Topeka police were able to search for two cars that they believe were involved in the incident.
Similarly, in Reading, Pennsylvania, on May 2, a home security camera captured video of an accident that occurred between a car and a school bus. According to neighbors who witnessed the accident, a black car was spotted going the wrong way down a one-way street, and after running into an intersection, crashed into the bus.
The bus was carrying children, but no one was hurt during the accident.
Experts in the field of anticipate more stories like these are going to become prevalent in the news as security cameras become more commonly used in private homes. In past years, security equipment was incredibly expensive and technologically advanced, which made it difficult for residents to use it in their home, but now, with the advent of new technology, home surveillance camerashave become more accessible to a broader range of people.
In fact, a number of home security companies offer surveillance cameras as part of their home security packages, and there are also an array of do-it-yourself options that are relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
In addition to surveillance cameras offered from traditional, there are also new forms of technology, such as smartphone apps, that allow individuals to record surveillance video from their mobile device.
As the trend of home security cameras continues to grow, the public can likely expect to see quite a bit of strange footage caught on tape.
