Most people think of the wind swept, sunny paradise of Hawaii as a place where people flock to bask in sun and surf the waves, not worry about robberies. Poverty and crime, however, have reared their ugly heads in this paradise as well. A local woman’s sense of security was shaken after her home was burglarized in broad daylight recently.
The woman had left her home one morning to go to work only to return that evening to find over $20,000 worth of valuables had been stolen. Her neighborhood had recently noticed an alarming rise in strange, unknown people around the area. The homeowner had actually recently inquired about adding an to her home just two days before the event. At the time though, she had no system yet in place.
The thieves apparently broke in through her 11-year old son’s bedroom window. They took computers, handbags, cash, jewelry, and even her 300 lb safe. It became apparent to investigators that they couldn’t have taken the heavy safe out the window and over the fence — the way they had come in. They must have carried it out the front door to a waiting vehicle. None of the neighbors reported seeing anything, though. The thieves even took toiletries, soap, and shampoo.
Other neighbors, including a neighborhood board member, have begun increasing the security at their homes due to the increase in crime in the area. The neighborhood used to have an organized community watch program, but it has not been active in many years leaving each homeowner to rely solely on installing a to protect their property and valuables, though many have not installed one yet. One man said they had been more focused on preparing for a natural disaster then protecting their homes from one another.
The neighborhood has clearly been shaken by events and many hope to create awareness that each person needs to look out for the neighbors and report any suspicious activity or persons in the area. In the meantime, this particular homeowner is eager to get her home fully equipped with a home security system as soon possible.
Events like these highlight the needs for every home to install a . In many communities, burglars such as these are becoming more brazen and are breaking into homes both when people are home, and more often when they are at work. Without a security system, a thief can most likely take anything they want without a homeowner ever knowing anything is wrong until it is too late.
Some may think the is too much. However, the cost of losing all of your valuables, and more importantly your sense of peace, is infinitely more costly. This homeowner stated that while she can replace the material things she lost, it will take a very long time to replace her and her son’s sense of safety in their own home.
