AT&T Expanding Into Home Security Field

AT&TAT&T, one of the leaders in cell phones and smartphone technology, announced in April that it is releasing a new that will enable users to control most of its options through their cell phones. This system, which is known as AT&T Digital Life, will be available to homeowners in a variety of packages, one of which they can choose depending on their budget. The system will include such security options as being able to lock and unlock doors, turn lights off and on, and even control security cameras in the home, all from an app on their phone. Not only does this give the user more control over their home security, but it also allows them to do it in a way that’s convenient and user-friendly.

The home security business has been growing exponentially over the last few years.

Ralph de la Vega, chief executive of AT&T Wireless, said he thought home security would be a major opportunity to increase revenue, because only 20 percent of homes have security systems, leaving millions of homeowners as potential buyers.”

Not only is there a wide market for like this, but also because so many people own cell phones, AT&T considered this a logical step for increasing their profits. Not only does the fact of cell phone ownership positively impact the potential for growth, but because smartphone users are always looking for new ways to use their phones, AT&T is taking advantage of this by offering them control of Digital Life through a number of apps.

There are a variety of options to choose from with this new system, and consumers can decide between either a basic system or one that is more advanced and has extra features. For those who are on a budget, the basic package comes with home surveillance, a reliable backup battery in case of power failure, and an indoor alarm. The installation for this package is $150, and the monitoring fee is $30 monthly. The more advanced package includes all of these features, plus a sensor that detects when windows are broken, a smoke detector, and a motion sensor. The installation price for this package is $250, with a monthly monitoring fee of $40. In addition, no matter which package they choose, customers can also add other options to their security systems, such as automatic door locks that they can lock and unlock via their cell phones, for only $5.00 more a month.
