One of the biggest misconceptions about home security systems is that they are not pet friendly. This is simply not true. There are certain features which will have to be strategically placed or eliminated, but it certainly does not mean that the entire home security system is obsolete simply because you have a pet!
One of the first things that you should do if you’ve got a dog or cat and are looking to get a home security system, is to look into wireless security systems. We suggest wireless because there wont be any loose wires floating around for a puppy to chew through or a cat to play with. The last thing you want happening is for a pet to fire a false alarm and have the police show up to your home while you are not there in order to rescue… your cat?
The other thing we suggest eliminating or carefullyplacing is the motion detectors. The motion detector does not come standard with all alarm systems, but it is certainly an option and many people feel more comfortable with one in their home. It is one of the first lines of defense in a home, but your pet might be able to trip the security system if you’ve armed it and you’re not home just by walking around. You can certainly eliminate the motion detectors from your home security system. If this is the route you choose to go, it would be wise to invest in another line of defense like a glass break sensor.
If you have a professional come and install your home security system be sure to tell them to install it in a pet friendly manner. You can have them place a motion detector high up to avoid low ground movement. If you have purchased a DIY security system, definiftely give the company a call before you go and place sensors around your house. They should be able to give you a few tips when it comes time to do the installation.
The biggest thing we’re saying is hat you are certainly NOT out of luck when it comes to pets and home security systems. There are plenty of options out there- for homes with and without pets.
