Apartments, especially those that are being rented have a different set of rules and needs that need to be followed. A standard security system will not suffice and may not even be allowed in your typical apartment building. We want to go over what makes a good security system for an apartment and touch on a few of the great companies out there that have these options available.

One of the biggest problems that any renter has with their property is that they cannot alter the property which they live on. This means that a system that is professionally installed (and has a ton of wires) is not going to be your best bet. A wireless security system, or one that can be installed by the apartment’s resident is going to be a good option. A wireless security system will eliminate the need to run wires all throughout the apartment and a DIY security system means that you can install it yourself in less than an hour. This also means that if you move, it will be easy to pack up and install in your new home.

Something that we always like to point out, is that you should always consult your landlord before installing a security system. Most of the time it is not an issue. You’re protecting both your property and theirs.

Finally, there are some great companies out there that offer these features. Lifeshield, Vivint, ADT, and FrontPoint all have great wireless alarm systems that homeowners can take advantage of. We definitely recommend calling each one and explaining your situation. Most security system companies understand that there are all kinds of home owners, apartment renters, apartment owners out there. They need to meet the needs of every demographic and have a variety of options available in order to accommodate your needs.
